Benefits of Essential Oils

Posted on

There is no surprise that natural essential oils are becoming popular, as a replacement for artificial fragrances and for their health benefits. Essential oils are a much healthier option for your skin than synthetic alternatives since the skin’s porous characteristics absorb nearly everything put on it - and it can be impossible to know what chemicals are in synthetics.

Artificial fragrances are not your friend

You might not think twice when you see fragrance on your product’s ingredient list. However, because the formula for fragrances can be a company secret, manufacturers are not obliged to list what their fragrance is made of. And this usually means that the fragrance is artificial.

Artificial fragrances have the potential to cause skin irritation, allergies, eczema, headaches and a multitude of other negative effects. Although the purpose of skincare is to aid and heal your skin, a lot of creams and topical ointments contain artificial fragrances - causing more irritation to some skin than without.

However, by using natural essential oils, they not only provide a beautiful fragrance (that actually provides benefits) but they are a much gentler and effective option to take care of your skin. Best used in conjunction with carrier ingredients, essential oils can be found in all of Ovi Earth’s skincare products, for an organic and healthy routine.

See our blog post here for other skin care ingredients you should avoid.

Ylang Ylang

Ylang Ylang, pronounced Ee-lang Ee-lang (don’t worry, we all pronounce it wrong), is a tree with a bright yellow flower native to the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and Queensland, Australia.

In topical applications, ylang ylang essential oil displays anti-inflammatory properties, aiding to reduce redness, swelling from acne and soothing diminished skin. Ylang ylang also balances the oil production of the skin and helps to retain hydration. Paired with its subtle floral aroma, ylang ylang is also used to promote relaxation and reduce stress. Found in our Ylang Ylang & Geranium Night Cream, the essential oil supersedes any artificial fragrance that some skincare uses.

Lemon Myrtle
Producing a pleasant ‘lemony’ scent, Lemon Myrtle is native to north-east Australia. More powerful than tea tree, lemon myrtle essential oil has impressive antiseptic and antifungal properties, aiding skin infections and impurities. As the highest natural source of citral, lemon myrtle produces beautiful natural lemon fragrances, and is the perfect uplifting essence to start your day - see Lemon Myrtle Day Cream
